{"id":175,"date":"2021-03-23T20:02:07","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T20:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/?p=175"},"modified":"2021-05-13T14:11:24","modified_gmt":"2021-05-13T14:11:24","slug":"southamptons-art-world-makes-headlines-twice-in-one-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/southamptons-art-world-makes-headlines-twice-in-one-day","title":{"rendered":"Southampton&#8217;s Art World Makes Headlines Twice in One Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today has been a big day for art in the city, with two headline stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Banksy piece presented by the artist to Southampton General Hospital last year has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-hampshire-56497104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold for a record \u00a314.4 million,<\/a> raising the funds for NHS charities.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"videodiv\">\n<iframe class=\"videoframe\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av-embeds\/56497104\/vpid\/p08chlpq\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And looking forward to the excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southamptoncityartgallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southampton City Art Gallery<\/a> reopening later in spring, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2021\/mar\/22\/national-gallery-seals-southampton-special-relationship-with-monet-loan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Gallery has agreed to one of its largest ever loans to a UK gallery<\/a>, including pieces by Monet and Gainsborough. Apparently the relationship between the galleries stretches back to Southampton City Art Gallery&#8217;s foundation in 1939, with the National Gallery&#8217;s director acting as an acquisition and collections advisor for the new gallery &#8211; I had no idea. The special exhibition will run from 28 May &#8211; 2 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image.png 976w, https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/shoplocalsouthampton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With free entry and one of the most extensive art collections outside London, Southampton City Art Gallery is an attraction for the city to be proud of, and well worth a visit. When things are more open, I highly recommend an art and coffee crawl around the central art galleries, also featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/jhg.art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Hansard Gallery<\/a>, and of course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mettricks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mettricks<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today has been a big day for art in the city, with two headline stories.
